How to Make January Suck Less: A Survival Guide for Business Owners

Ah, January. The month that feels like a Monday morning stretched out over 31 days.

As a business owner, you might find yourself battling post-holiday blues, struggling to get back into the swing of things, and grappling with the inevitable slump in productivity. But fear not! We’re here to help you make January suck less and kick-start the new year on the right foot. Here are some actionable tips to survive (and thrive?!) through the January blues:

  1. Embrace the January Jumpstart 🦘

Instead of dragging yourself reluctantly into the new year, why not embrace it with open arms? Set exciting goals, revamp your workspace, and shake up your usual routine. Treat January as a blank slate waiting to be filled – it really helps with the mindset shift.

  1. Break Up the Monotony ❌

Let’s face it—January can feel like a never-ending slog of cold weather and post-holiday blues. Inject some excitement into your routine by breaking up the monotony. Schedule fun activities or outings to look forward to throughout the month, whether it’s a team-building event, a lunchtime yoga class, or a spontaneous mid-week social occasion. Adding a bit of spontaneity can work wonders for morale.

  1. Master the Art of Time Management ⏱️

With the holiday hustle and bustle behind us, January offers the perfect opportunity to reassess your time management strategies. Invest in productivity tools, prioritise tasks effectively, and streamline your workflow to maximise efficiency.

  1. Treat Yourself (and Your Team)👌

January doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. Treat yourself and your team to something to lift spirits and boost morale. Whether it’s a team outing, an extended lunch with board games and snacks or signing up to a team challenge. It can all go a long way towards making January more bearable.

  1. Find Your Motivation 💪

Let’s be honest—finding motivation in January can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. But fear not! Rediscover your motivation by setting clear, achievable goals and rewarding yourself for milestones along the way.

  1. Embrace the Power of Positivity 🙌

Cultivate a positive mindset by focusing on the silver linings and practicing gratitude daily. If that’s a struggle, we get it. Try podcasts, talking to others or moving your body to help.

  1. Beat the Winter Blues 💙

The winter months can take a toll on mental and emotional wellbeing, leaving you feeling lethargic and uninspired. Beat the winter blues by prioritising self-care and wellness. Get plenty of rest, eat nourishing foods, and make time for activities that bring you joy, whether it’s a brisk walk in the snow or a cosy night in with a good book.

  1. Celebrate Small Wins 🥳

In the midst of January’s gloom, it’s easy to overlook the small victories. Take a moment to celebrate every win, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Whether it’s landing a new client, hitting a sales target, or mastering a new skill, every step forward is worth celebrating.

So, there you have it—eight actionable tips to help you make January suck less and kick-start the new year with gusto.

Embrace the challenges, seize the opportunities, and remember: you’ve got this!

Nailing The End Of The Year: Financial Tips and Wellness Hacks for Business Owners

It’s the final stretch of the year, autumn leaves are falling, Christmas is in every shop and we’re all on the home straight for some much-needed time off.

However, as the days get shorter, the to-do list seems to get longer and the level of exhaustion for business owners is higher than ever.

Fear not though, we’ve got your back!

In this blog post, we’re diving into nailing the end of the year with finance tips and wellbeing hacks that will help you as a business owner.

So, grab your favourite mug of motivation (we won’t judge you on the contents), kick back and let’s tackle the end of the year together.

Financial Tips To Nail The End Of The Year 📈

  • Reflect and Review ✍️

What worked well for your business this year? What could use some attention? By understanding where you’re at, you can be in a strong position for 2024.

  • Look at your numbers 👀

Now you’ve reviewed what has worked for you this year and what hasn’t, see exactly where you are financially – Reconcile your bank, review your profit and loss (if this sounds like gibberish, that’s okay and what we’re here for), assess your cash flow, and identify any outstanding invoices. This will help you going forward.

  • Tax 101 🔢

Nobody likes surprises, especially when it comes to taxes. Stay one step ahead by reviewing your current tax situation.

And make sure to check with your accountant to uncover potential deductions and credits.

  • Check-in with your budget 🫰

Set realistic and achievable financial goals for the upcoming year. If you’re not sure where to start, speak with a financial planner/adviser or your accountant.

Wellbeing hacks for the rest of the year 🙌

  • The Power of Pause 👍

In the craziness that is the end of the year, it’s easy to forget to hit the pause button.

Our solution? Remembering to breathe. We know this sounds ridiculous but when was the last time you actively stopped to take some deep breaths?

Whether it’s literally sitting at your desk, on a short walk or during a meditation session, pausing for breath makes a huge difference. Your business will thank you for the renewed energy too.

  • Prioritise and Delegate 🤝

You’re not a one-person army. Identify tasks that can be delegated and trust your team to handle them. This not only lightens your load but empowers your team members to shine in their roles.

  • Celebrate Small Wins 🎉

Don’t overlook the small victories in the race to achieve big goals. Celebrate milestones, both personal and professional. It could be closing a significant deal, reaching a fitness goal, or simply mastering the art of inbox zero. Acknowledging these wins fuels motivation for the journey ahead.

  • Do something for you👌

When you run a business, you blink and it’s a new week. And before you know it, all you’ve done is work without taking any time for yourself. And on the run-up to Christmas, you can times this by 10, meaning you can seriously neglect yourself! Plan in time for you each week – Whether it’s the gym, a coffee date, dinner out or an early night with your phone off. Whatever makes you feel recharged.

How To Cut Yourself Sum Slack This Christmas

Today’s blog is an important one. It’s how to cut yourself sum slack and look after yourself as we wrap up 2022 and prepare for 2023👋

We’re wrapping up one heck of a year. We think it’s fair to say, we’re all shattered and looking forward to the Christmas break!

However, with any break as a business owner, it isn’t really a break. It just means that you have to do more work before and after your break to compensate.

So, we’re here to remind you to cut yourself sum slack and give you some ways in which to do that👍

Starting with…

The official launch of our podcast Sum Slack!

It’s designed to encourage you to quite literally cut yourself Sum Slack (finance pun intended!) as a business owner👌

Each episode is around 20 minutes so that we can be part of your commute.

We cover everything from finance hacks, business madness and current affairs, to maintaining your sanity, juggling kids, work-life balance and more, over a beer🍻

We also have some awesome guests lined up to give you their perspective on being a busy owner, alongside some helpful tips from their industry to help you.

We’ve released two episodes so far:

We also hope they help you realise that it’s okay to feel all the feels when you’re a business owner. It can be a lot and it’s been one heck of a year😅

We have new episodes of the podcast coming out every fortnight.

In the meantime, here’s some other ways you can cut yourself Sum Slack as we wrap up 2022. You deserve it!🙌

3 Ways To Cut Yourself Sum Slack

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others ✅ – Especially this time of year, you will be seeing people talk about their highlights of the year, goals for 2023, etc. Remember though, these are just highlights. Wherever you’re at is totally cool and where you’re supposed to be.

  1. Treat yourself like a mate ✅ – Haven’t done your Christmas shopping yet? That’s okay. Feel like you’re struggling to get work wrapped up by Christmas? That’s alright too. You will get everything done you need to but in the meantime, don’t tell yourself off for having not done it yet. It won’t help you get things done and will just make you feel rubbish.

  1. Take 10 minutes to note the good ✅ – If you’re feeling low, or like you aren’t where you should be finishing off 2022, make some bullet points of good things that have happened in 2022 – Both personal and work related.

We often don’t realise how much good stuff has happened when we’re in the thick of it.

Noting them down not only reminds us, it’s also good to refer back to if we hit a wall.

Take it easy, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
