September Reset: 6 Ways to Get Your Business (and Finances) Back on Track

Can we just take a second to acknowledge that… we’re somehow in September already? 😳

If 2025 has flown by faster than your summer holidays, you’re not alone.

But instead of panicking about year-end deadlines, this is your friendly nudge to pause, reset, and make the last four months of the year count.

Here are 6 things you can do right now to get your business (and your numbers) back on track — without the overwhelm 👇

1. Check your Corporation Tax deadline

If your company year-end was 31st December, Corporation Tax is due on 1st October.

It’s one of those sneaky deadlines that shows up just when you’ve got a million other things on your plate. Leaving it to the last minute = stress you don’t need.

💡 ChadStone Tip:

  • Check when your Corporation Tax bill is due (dates vary depending on year-end).
  • Put aside around 20% of your profits each month so the money’s ready when the bill lands. No scrambling, no “where do we find it?”, no drama.

Your future self (and your accountant) will thank you for making it a habit.

📊 2. Review your management accounts

Think of management accounts as your business dashboard. Without them, you’re basically driving blind.

They’ll show you:

– What’s actually working (and what isn’t)

– Where the money is going

– Whether you can afford that hire / investment / upgrade you’ve been putting off

💡 ChadStone Tip:

If you don’t have regular management accounts yet, now’s the perfect time to start. You’ll thank yourself in December.

👥 3. Get payroll & compliance sorted

Payroll isn’t glamorous — but when it goes wrong, everyone notices.

Ask yourself:

– Are our systems fully compliant with the latest rules?

– Are we paying people accurately and on time?

– Can this process scale as our team grows?

💡 ChadStone Tip:

If the answer to any of these makes you wince, now’s the time to fix it.

💸 4. Stop the quiet leaks

Some drains on your business aren’t loud — they just quietly cost you thousands. Think:

– Subscriptions you’ve forgotten about

– Clients that drain your time but don’t pay their way

– Prices that haven’t been reviewed in years

💡 ChadStone Tip:

Take half an hour to list out your tools, costs, and clients. Cut the stuff that isn’t serving you.

🧠 5. Revisit your goals (and your energy)

Those January goals? Do they still fit? Or are they stressing you out more than motivating you?

September is a great time to:

– Reset your goals for Q4

– Be honest about what’s dragging you down

– Check in on your own energy (are you resting as well as working?)

💡 ChadStone Tip:

Business ownership doesn’t come with medals for burnout.

🤝 6. Reconnect with your network

Most opportunities don’t come from algorithms. They come from conversations.

So whether it’s your accountant (👋), a business buddy, or someone you promised to follow up with six months ago… now’s the time to reach out.

💡 ChadStone Tip:

A simple “How’s your year going?” can open more doors than you’d think.

Final Thought

If you take one thing away, let it be this:

– It’s not too late to reset.

– September is a natural “fresh start”.

– Small steps now can save you big headaches in December.

And if you’d like some extra support with management accounts, tax planning, or just making sure your payroll doesn’t give you nightmares — we’re right here, biscuits and all.

7 Things Quietly Draining Your Business Right Now (And How to Fix Them)

Because not every business problem kicks the door down. Some just quietly cost you thousands.

We speak to a lot of business owners — and more often than not, the stuff causing the most stress isn’t loud or dramatic. It’s the quiet leaks.

The small-but-steady drains on your time, energy, and margins.

The good news? Once you spot them, they’re usually pretty easy to fix.

So, here are 7 things that might be draining your business more than you realise — and how to sort them 👇

1. Keeping hold of bad-fit clients 👎

You know the ones. They drain your time, ignore your processes, and regularly make you question your life choices.

They might not seem like a problem when the invoices are going out… but when you factor in the stress, rework, and time lost? They’re expensive.

Fix it:

  • Know your red flags
  • Set clearer boundaries from enquiry level going forwards
  • Trust your gut
  • And if needed? Let them go. You’ll thank yourself later.

2. Not raising your prices 📈

If your costs have gone up but your prices haven’t changed in 2–3 years, your margins are almost definitely being squeezed.

You shouldn’t need to run twice as fast just to stand still.

Fix it:

  • Review your pricing every 12 months
  • Compare it against your rising costs
  • Communicate your value clearly (and confidently)

3. Subscription creep 💸

That software you trialled and forgot to cancel? That duplicate platform doing what your other platform already does?

It adds up — and fast.

Fix it:

  • Set a reminder to review your tools quarterly
  • Check for overlaps
  • Cancel anything you haven’t used in the past 3 months

4. Leaving your bookkeeping to the last minute 🧾

We get it. You’re busy. But the longer it’s left, the bigger the tangle — and the more it costs to fix.

It’s like ignoring laundry until it’s a floor-based mountain.

Fix it:

  • Set aside one day a month to check in with your numbers
  • Use MTD-approved (Making Tax Digital) software to automate what you can
  • Ask your accountant what can be streamlined

5. Doing everything yourself 🧠

The early days of business demand a bit of DIY. But wearing every hat forever is a recipe for burnout and bottlenecks.

Delegating doesn’t mean letting go of control — it means creating more space to focus on what you’re great at.

Fix it:

  • Start small (even 2 hours of VA support a week can help)
  • Identify your most draining tasks
  • Outsource or delegate what doesn’t need to be yours

6. Avoiding your numbers 🙈

We’re not here to tell you to obsess over every penny — but if you’re only looking at your finances once a year, you’re making decisions in the dark.

Confidence in your numbers = confidence in your decisions.

Fix it:

  • Review your P&L and cashflow monthly
  • Ask questions if things don’t make sense
  • Work with an accountant who’ll talk to you like a human

7. Never taking a break 💤

We’re not saying take six months off and move to Bali (although… tempting).

But running a business at full tilt, 12 months a year, with no recovery time? It takes a toll. On you and the business.

Fix it:

  • Plan your downtime like you plan your meetings
  • Switch off properly when you can
  • Remind yourself that rest is productive too

The tiny leaks matter.

If you’re tired of feeling like you’re sprinting just to keep up, it might not be a big fix you need — just a few small ones.

And if you’d like a fresh pair of eyes to help you spot the gaps?

We’re right here, biscuits and all.

How to Prep Your Business for the Summer Holidays (Without Losing the Plot)

Ah, summer.

Sunshine. Ice cream. Out-of-office replies.

And for many business owners… complete and utter mayhem.

Whether you’re wrangling childcare, managing staff holidays, or just trying to stay productive in a melting office, the summer holidays can hit hard.

Add in patchy client comms, seasonal slowdowns (or upticks!), and that one colleague who’s “just popping to the Algarve for three weeks,” and it’s easy to feel like you’re losing control.

So, here’s our very practical survival guide to financially and operationally prepping your business for the school holiday season—without breaking a sweat.

1. Forecast Your Cashflow (Yes, Even If It’s Boring)

Look—we know this doesn’t sound thrilling. But summer can mess with your incoming cash.

✅ Clients away = delayed payments
✅ Team on leave = delayed projects
✅ You on holiday = someone forgets a deadline

Do yourself a favour and get a clear view of your upcoming incomings and outgoings now.

If you spot a dip ahead, you can plan around it—rather than panic when it hits.

Bonus tip: If you use cloud accounting software, now’s a great time to set up cashflow alerts.

2. Automate What You Can (So You Can Actually Switch Off)

Whether you’re off for a full break or just juggling school runs, automation is your friend.

Think:

📧 Invoice reminders
📱 Social media scheduling
📦 E-commerce order processing
🗂️ Auto-responses that tell clients when you’ll reply (and help them help themselves)

Trust us, future you will thank you.

3. Set Boundaries (and Stick to Them Without Guilt)

If your summer working hours are different—tell people.

Set an out-of-office.
Update your email footer.
Put a line on your website.
Send clients a heads-up now.

It’s not unprofessional. It’s smart.

No one expects you to be superhuman—just clear.

4. Review Retainers, Direct Debits & Subscriptions

Summer is a brilliant time to do a bit of housekeeping.

That online tool you used once in March?
That subscription that renews quietly every month?
That software you’re paying for but your team abandoned six weeks ago?

Cancel it.

Or at least question whether it’s earning its keep. Small leaks in summer can turn into big gaps come autumn.

5. Embrace the Quiet (If You Can Find It)

Business a little slower this month? Rather than stress, use it strategically:

🧠 Review your pricing
📊 Catch up on your accounts
💬 Ask your clients for testimonials
🗺️ Plan Q4 now, when you’re not in crisis mode

Slow doesn’t mean lazy—it means opportunity.

6. Support Your Team (Without Losing Your Mind)

If you’ve got team members off over the holidays, you don’t need to pick up everything yourself.

Instead:

👯 Cross-train where possible
📝 Share clear instructions for temp cover
📅 Accept that some tasks might pause—and communicate that

And if you’re the one off? Leave a handover. Otherwise, you’re basically paying to stress-scroll Slack from a sun lounger.

7. Don’t Panic About the Chaos (You’re Not Alone)

Every business owner is facing some level of summer mayhem.

You are not behind. You are not failing.

You’re just a human trying to do your best while 65% of your clients are in Cornwall and your inbox is quietly turning into a monster.

You’ve got this.

(And we’ve got your back.)

Final Thought: Prep Now = Less Panic Later

If you take one thing away, let it be this:

Summer doesn’t have to derail your business.

With a little prep, some smart boundaries, and a few ice lollies in the freezer—you can come out the other side calmer, clearer, and ready for the final push to Christmas.

If you need help getting your finances summer-proof, we’re here.

Your No-Fluff Guide to Smashing the Second Half of 2025

Can we just take a second to acknowledge that… we’re halfway through the year already? 😳

If 2025 is flying by faster than your morning coffee, you’re not alone.

But instead of panicking about what’s left to do, this is your gentle (and hopefully helpful) nudge to take stock, re-align, and make the second half of the year work for you.

Here are a few tips to hit reset—without the overwhelm:

✅ 1. Revisit your goals (but make them honest)

What did you set out to do this year?

And more importantly—are those goals still relevant?

Sometimes what sounded great in January no longer fits by June. Take 20 minutes to reflect:

– What’s working?
– What’s dragging?
– What do you actually want for the rest of the year?

Resetting your goals doesn’t mean giving up—it means giving yourself permission to adapt.

💷 2. Get your finances in shape (yes, we’re going there)

The new tax year started in April—so if you’re still in last year’s mindset, it’s time to shake it off.

Here’s what we recommend this month:

– If you’ve got your P60, send it over.
– Get your Self Assessment sorted now—not in a December panic.
Review your cash flow—are your incomings and outgoings where they should be?
Top up your ISA if you haven’t yet. Start small if needed.

If any of this makes your head hurt—just shout. We can help.

🧠 3. Check in with your mindset

Mid-year burnout is a real thing, especially if you’ve been running full pelt since January.

Ask yourself:

– Have you had any proper time off this year?
– Are you building a business that works for your life—or just reacting to fires?
– Is there something you can delegate, ditch, or delay?

Book that day off. Delegate that task. Say no to things that don’t serve you.

Business ownership doesn’t come with medals for martyrdom.

✅ Reconnect With Your Support Network

You know those people you meant to message in January and never quite did? Now’s the perfect time. Whether it’s your accountant (👋), a business buddy, or that helpful connection you met at a networking event—check in.

Conversations spark ideas, collaboration creates momentum, and let’s face it… it’s just nice to feel like you’re not in this alone.

ChadStone tip: Don’t overthink it. A quick “Hey, how’s your year going?” message can go a long way.

🧰 Review Your Tools (Before They Start Slowing You Down)

Are you still using that clunky system you swore you’d ditch last year? Be honest.

Take half an hour to review the platforms, software, or processes you’re using in your business. If something’s causing more stress than it’s saving—it’s time to switch it up.

ChadStone tip: Our client portal exists for this exact reason. If you’re not using it yet, now’s your sign. It makes your (and our) life easier. Promise.

🧠 Look After Yourself (Seriously)

We know it’s a cliché, but we’ll say it anyway: you can’t pour from an empty mug (even if it’s filled with lukewarm coffee you’ve reheated three times).

The halfway point of the year is a great time to check in—not just on your business, but on you. Are you taking breaks? Are your work hours creeping into every evening? Are you remembering that you’re human, not a machine?

ChadStone tip: Book that day off, go for that lunchtime walk, or close the laptop at 4pm just because you can. Your business needs a functioning you more than it needs a burned-out superhero.

If you only take one thing away, let it be this:

– Take the pressure off needing to have everything figured out by now.

– It’s not too late to reset, refocus and finish strong.

– Small changes today can make a huge difference by December.

And if you want support with any of it—we’ve got your back.

10 Small Business Money Mistakes (And How to Stop Making Them)

Running a business means juggling a lot: clients, marketing, operations, team, goals, the list goes on.

So, it’s no wonder that financial management sometimes ends up in the ‘deal with later’ pile.

But here’s the truth: if your numbers aren’t working, your business isn’t either.

We see it all the time (and we’ve even made a few of these mistakes ourselves over the years).

So, here are 10 of the most common money slip-ups we see business owners make—and how you can avoid them.

  1. Treating your accountant like an afterthought 😭

We get it. Accountants can be seen as the people you only need once a year, in a blind panic, before the tax deadline.

But the best results happen when your accountant is involved throughout the year, not just at the end of it.

What to do instead:

  • Have regular check-ins (even quarterly!) to review performance.
  • Ask questions when things feel confusing.
  • Don’t wait until you’re stressed or behind—involve us before it becomes a thing.

Better yet? Management accounts. These give you a clearer, more proactive view of your business performance across the year—not just when your year-end hits.

They’re ideal if you’re an established business wanting to grow, manage cash flow, or get more control over your numbers.

They help you:

  • Compare quarter-on-quarter progress
  • Spot where you’re overspending
  • Make better decisions (before it’s too late to change anything)

If you’ve never had them before, we’d be happy to show you what they look like and how they could help.

Your accountant should be a strategic part of your business. Use them well, and they’ll save you time, money and headaches.

  1. Confusing profit with cash 💷

You can have a profitable business and still run out of money. Yup, it hurts to type it. But it’s true.

Profit is what’s left after expenses. Cash is what’s in the bank. And just because your accounts say you made money doesn’t mean you’ve actually got it to spend.

What to do instead:

  • Understand your cash flow and review it monthly.
  • Set aside money for tax the second an invoice is paid.
  • Don’t rely on what’s “left in the account” as a spending guide.

We always like to say cash is king (or queen!) here as it’s so true!

  1. Not knowing your numbers 🔢

It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many business owners couldn’t tell you their monthly income, outgoings or margins.

That’s not a judgement—it’s a sign that the systems (or time!) just aren’t working.

What to do instead:

  • Set 30 minutes a week to review your financial dashboard.
  • Know your break-even point.
  • Review your pricing every 6–12 months.

You don’t need to be a finance expert. But you do need to know the basics to steer the ship.

  1. Doing it all manually 😪

Still taking photos of receipts and filing them in a box labelled ‘sort later’? That’s soul-destroying for you and us.

These days, there are apps and automations that can do the heavy lifting for you.

What to do instead:

  • Use accounting software with built-in receipt scanning.
  • Get set up on a secure client portal (like ours!) to upload and track everything in one place.
  • Automate recurring invoices, reminders, and reconciliations.

Manual admin wastes your time and increases the risk of error. The right systems pay for themselves.

  1. Avoiding the big-picture planning 🖼️

It’s easy to get stuck in the day-to-day. But if you never zoom out, you’ll miss opportunities to grow, improve, or pivot before it’s too late.

What to do instead:

  • Review your goals quarterly.
  • Book time with your accountant to deep-dive into future planning.
  • Ask: “If nothing changes, where will we be in 6 months?”

You don’t need a 100-page business plan. Just clarity on where you’re headed—and how your finances can support it.

6. Not building a buffer 💷

The businesses that bounce back fastest from setbacks? They’ve usually got a rainy-day pot to fall back on.

The fix: If you can, build a small emergency fund into your business account—ideally 1–3 months of core running costs. It’s not always easy (or possible!) but even £50 a month adds up.

7. Mixing business and personal finances 😬

We get it—it’s tempting to use one account for everything. But come tax time, it’s a headache you really don’t need.

The fix: Open a separate business account (if you haven’t already). It’ll make cash flow clearer, taxes easier, and help you see how your business is actually doing.

8. Forgetting about tax until the deadline 😱

Self Assessment in January. Corporation tax a few months later. VAT every quarter (if you’re registered). It’s a lot.

The fix: Get those returns done early. As soon as you have your info—send it in. You’ll know what you owe, have longer to save, and your accountant won’t cry into their coffee.

9. Not looking after yourself 🧠

Burnout is expensive. It slows everything down—and often leads to rushed decisions.

The fix: Look after the boss. That’s you. Whether it’s taking regular breaks, switching off properly at the weekend, or speaking to someone when things get tough—it’s not a luxury, it’s business maintenance.

  1. BONUS TIP: Don’t forget about you 🙌

One of the most common gaps we see is business owners forgetting to pay themselves properly, plan for their future, or prioritise their wellbeing.

What to do instead:

  • Factor your salary into your business costs.
  • Speak to a financial adviser about pensions, insurance, and savings.
  • Take time off when you need it—seriously.

Your business needs you well. Financially, mentally, and physically.

If you only take one thing away, let it be this 👇

Money mistakes are normal. But they’re also avoidable—especially if you’ve got the right support.

If you’re reading this and nodding along, that’s a sign it might be time to get some help.

Whether it’s setting up better systems, understanding your cash flow, or finally putting a plan in place—we’re always here for a no-pressure chat.

How to Keep Your Business Goals on Track (Without Burning Out)

So you set your Q2 goals following our last blog (it’s here if you want a refresh or if you haven’t done it yet – no judgement here).

But now what?

Because let’s be honest: planning is easy when the sun’s shining and it’s future you’s problem.

But keeping that momentum going through Q2? That’s where most people fall off the wagon (usually around the time the inbox hits triple digits).

The good news? There’s still loads of time to make Q2 your most productive, profitable quarter yet—without spiralling into overwhelm.

Here’s how to stay focused, on track, and a few steps ahead.

🗓️ 1. Revisit your Q2 goals (like… actually look at them)

Remember those goals you set a couple of weeks ago with your coffee in hand and a “new quarter, new me” energy?

Now’s the time to give them a reality check:

– Are they still aligned with where your business is headed?

– Are they specific enough to do something with?

– Do they make you feel motivated—or stressed?

Something to think on:

If it makes your stomach hurt, it’s not a goal—it’s a punishment. Reframe it or break it down.

📊 2. Use your Q1 data as your sat nav

Your Q1 numbers aren’t just for filing away—they’re the blueprint for how to move forward.

Look at:

– What brought in the most revenue?

– What drained your time with little return?

– Any costs you didn’t need? (Be honest…)

If you’re not sure how to get this info, this is where Management Accounts come in.

Real-time insights. Better planning. Fewer surprises.

We won’t bang on about it (for long), but if you’re not doing this yet… you’re flying blind.

👉 You can talk to us about Management Accounts here.

⏰ 3. Block time to work on the business, not just in it

You know how you’re always too busy to sort your own stuff because you’re busy sorting everyone else’s? Yeah. Us too.

That’s why we recommend:

✔️ A monthly CEO day

✔️ Or at least a 90-minute weekly deep work slot

✔️ No phones, no meetings, just thinking/planning/creating

It feels self-indulgent. It’s actually essential.

💡 4. Pick one thing to improve this quarter

Just one.

Maybe it’s:

– Finally hiring someone to take admin off your plate

– Automating your invoicing

– Reviewing your prices

– Delegating something (anything)

Small changes lead to big results. Especially when they stop you being the bottleneck in your own business.

🧠 5. Keep it human: check in on your energy

Not everything is about spreadsheets and forecasts.

If Q2 already feels frantic, ask:

– Are you trying to do too much?

– Are your goals actually realistic?

– Have you left any space to… breathe?

It’s okay to adjust your pace, especially if you’re juggling running a business with, well, life.

If you only take one thing away, let it be this:

– Reconnect with your Q2 goals

– Use your Q1 data to guide the next steps

– Make space to think

– Improve one small thing

– And don’t forget to check in with yourself

Okay, that’s more than one thing, but if you’re here anyway, we may as well give you this whole blog summarised into 5 steps you can take.

We’re big believers that business should work for you—not the other way around.

So, if Q2 isn’t going the way you hoped yet, that’s okay. You’ve still got loads of time to turn it around—and we’re always in your corner if you need a hand.

P.S. Need a quick planning chat or financial review?

We’re here (and we’re bringing the coffee).

Spring Planning Mode: How to Hit Your Q2 Goals Without the Overwhelm

Spring is officially here 🌱

(Well, according to the calendar anyway—whether the UK weather agrees is another story.)

With Q1 wrapping up, now’s the time to check in, reset, and get a game plan for Q2 before the summer chaos sneaks up on you.

The good news? A few small tweaks now can make the next few months easier, more productive, and less stressful—so you’re not scrambling to hit targets at the last minute.

Here’s how to spring clean your business, finances, and mindset to set yourself up for a solid Q2.

1️⃣ Look Back Before You Look Forward

Before jumping into new goals, take 10 minutes to reflect on Q1:

✔️ What worked well? (More of that, please.)

✔️ What flopped? (We all have one thing—ditch it.)

✔️ What took up way too much time? (Automate or delegate it.)

Sometimes, the best business move isn’t adding new things—it’s tweaking what’s already there.

2️⃣ Get Your Finances in Order Before April Hits

April marks the new tax year, so now is prime time to get your accounts sorted before things get messy.

✔️ Finalise & submit any loose ends from Q1—invoices, receipts, expenses, the works.

✔️ Maximise your tax allowances before 5th April—top up ISAs, review pension contributions, and make sure you’re not leaving money on the table. If you take anything from this blog, please let this be it!

✔️ Check if your cash flow is strong enough for your Q2 goals—do you need to cut costs, adjust pricing, or chase overdue invoices?

A little proactive planning now can save a lot of headaches later.

Need help? That’s what we’re here for.

3️⃣ Set ‘Spring-Friendly’ Goals (a.k.a. Ones You’ll Actually Stick To)

Let’s be real—Q1 motivation fades fast, and by April, most people are winging it. So, instead of setting unrealistic ‘transform your business in 3 months’ goals, try this:

📌 Break goals into smaller wins – instead of “Increase revenue by 20%,” try “Secure 3 new clients by June.”

📌 Make them habit-based – instead of “Post more on LinkedIn,” try “Share one business insight per week.”

📌 Use a deadline that isn’t June 30th – midway check-ins keep you on track without the last-minute rush.

Not every goal needs to be huge—sometimes, small improvements done consistently are the ones that move the needle the most. If you want further evidence and motivation around this, we highly recommend Atomic Habits by James Clear.

4️⃣ Fix What’s Holding Your Business Back

Every business has that one thing that slows things down (or annoys you every week).

🚨 Tech issues? – is your software outdated? Are you still manually doing things that could be automated?

🚨 Too many distractions? – how’s your workspace? Are you setting clear boundaries?

🚨 Clients taking up too much time? – do you need to revisit pricing, scope, or boundaries?

Your future self will thank you for fixing these pain points now instead of letting them drag into summer.

5️⃣ Book in Some Face-to-Face Time

One of the biggest frustrations we hear from business owners is feeling disconnected from their accountant, suppliers, or clients.

Let’s change that.

✔️ Book in a face-to-face check-in with us (or at least a Zoom).

✔️ Reach out to your key clients or suppliers—a quick chat can go a long way.

✔️ Get out and network—whether it’s events, local meetups, or just grabbing coffee with another business owner.

You’ll be surprised how one good conversation can spark new ideas, collaborations, or even opportunities.

6️⃣ Most Importantly: Don’t Forget to Enjoy It

Business doesn’t have to be a never-ending grind.

February Business Check-In: Keeping the Momentum Going

January was a trial run—February is when the real year starts.

By now, the festive glow has fully worn off, the leftover Christmas chocolates have vanished (sadly), and everyone is back in business mode. But let’s be honest—February can feel a bit flat.

The “new year, new me” energy is fading, Self-Assessment season is out of the way (thank GOODNESS), and now it’s about keeping the momentum going without burning out.

So, here’s your February check-in—a few things to help you stay on track, keep motivated, and maybe even enjoy the next few months.

1. Revisit Your Goals—Are They Actually Working? 🤔

Remember those ambitious goals you set in January? Now’s the time to check in on them.

– Are they realistic, or did New Year’s enthusiasm get the better of you?

– Are they still relevant, or has the start of the year changed your focus?

– Do you need to adjust anything to make them achievable?

Business goals should work for you, not leave you feeling overwhelmed by mid-February. If something isn’t working, tweak it—small, sustainable wins are better than big, unachievable goals.

2. Tidy Up the Business Admin Before It Piles Up 📂

We know, we know—admin isn’t exciting. But now that January’s chaos has settled, February is the perfect time to get your business back in order.

✔️ Invoices & payments – chase up anything outstanding (or get someone to do it for you).

✔️ Expenses – if your receipts are still in a pile/on your phone/in 17 different places, now’s your chance to sort them.

✔️ Business systems – is your current way of working actually working? If it’s causing stress, now’s the time to look at better tools or processes.

No one wants an admin nightmare waiting for them in April. Do future-you a favour.

3. Don’t Let February Steal Your Motivation 🚀

January forces you into action, but February? February is where motivation quietly starts slipping.

It’s dark, it’s cold, and let’s be honest—working from bed feels very tempting.

So, how do you keep going?

🔹 Remind yourself WHY you started your business – what’s the long-term goal?

🔹 Do something exciting – a new project, a collaboration, or even just changing up your workspace.

🔹 Set micro-goals – one thing per week that moves your business forward without feeling overwhelming.

If you need an accountability boost, tell someone your one big priority for the week and get them to check in on you. (Or, if you work alone, bribe yourself with snacks).

4. Reconnect with Your Network 🤝

When’s the last time you checked in with clients, suppliers, or connections?

February is a great time to:

– Follow up on leads or opportunities that got lost in the January madness.

– Reach out to clients you haven’t heard from in a while (a simple “How’s everything going?” can do wonders).

– Book in a networking event, coffee meet-up, or chat—talking to actual people is good for business and motivation.

Most good opportunities come from conversations, not algorithms. Get talking.

5. Give Yourself a Break (Seriously, You’ve Earned It)

The “hustle” mentality tells us to push through, but let’s be real—burnout is not the goal here.

If you’re feeling exhausted already:

🔹 Take a break without feeling guilty—an afternoon off won’t kill your business.

🔹 Step away from your desk for lunch—we see you, serial desk-eaters.

🔹 Remember that running a business is a marathon, not a sprint—look after yourself so you’re still going strong in December.

The best business decisions are made with a clear head, not one running on fumes.

Here’s to a Strong February & an Even Better 2025

February can be flat, or it can be a launchpad for the rest of the year. Small tweaks, fresh motivation, and not letting admin pile up will set you up for a smoother ride.

And as always—if you need support, advice, or just a strong coffee and a chat, we’re here.

📩 Drop us a message if you want to talk finances, business strategy, or just need reassurance that you’re doing just fine.

Back to Business: Top Tips for Starting 2025 on the Right Foot

Welcome to 2025! 🎉

Hopefully, you’ve had a festive season filled with good food, plenty of laughs, and minimal thoughts about work.

January can feel like a bit of a whirlwind when you’re trying to get back into everything, whilst also trying to shake off the holiday fog.

Here are our top tips for business owners to ease back into the new year, stay organised, and set yourself up for a successful 2025.

  1. Reflect Before You Restart 🤔

Before diving headfirst into your to-do list, take some time to reflect on 2024:

– What went well for your business?

– What didn’t go to plan?

– Are there things you’ve been doing out of habit that might not be serving you anymore?

A quick review can help you identify where to focus your energy and what to leave behind. It doesn’t have to be a formal process—a cup of coffee and a chat with your team can work wonders.

  1. Set Realistic Goals (and Write Them Down) ✍️

Everyone loves a grand resolution, but let’s be honest, overambitious goals can lead to burnout by February. Instead, set a few realistic and measurable goals for your business.

– Break them into quarterly targets so they feel manageable.

– Write them down and share them with your team to create accountability.

For example, “Increase social media engagement by 15% by Q2” is a lot more achievable (and useful) than “Be better at marketing.”

  1. Tackle Your Finances First 💷

January is peak fragile accountant season 🥲, so make life easier for yourself (and your accountant):

– Get your records organised for your self-assessment (deadline: 31st Jan—don’t say we didn’t warn you).

– Review your cash flow and identify any gaps—January is a notorious pinch point for many businesses.

– Consider setting up a budget for 2025. Even if it’s basic, it can help you keep things on track.

If you’re already behind, don’t panic – just start now. And if you need help, we’re here (with coffee).

  1. Prioritise Your Wellbeing 🙌

The “new year, new me” energy is great… until you hit mid-January and realise you’ve taken on too much. Running a business can be all-consuming, so it’s important to look after yourself too:

– Set boundaries—switch off after work (no, emails at 11 pm are not “productive”).

– Delegate tasks where you can—yes, even if you think you can do them faster.

– Take breaks, even if it’s just a quick walk or a decent lunch away from your desk.

A well-rested business owner is a productive business owner.

  1. Reconnect With Your Network 🤝

The start of the year is a great time to check in with your clients, suppliers, and connections.

It’s also an opportunity to:

– Thank clients for their support in 2024.

– Follow up with leads you didn’t have time for before Christmas.

– Reach out to that local business you’ve been meaning to collaborate with.

Business is built on relationships, and January is the perfect time to nurture them.

  1. Make 2025 Work For You👌

This year doesn’t have to look like last year. If there’s something about your business that isn’t working—whether it’s your processes, workload, or even the direction you’re heading—now’s the time to reassess.

Ask yourself:

– What would make running your business feel more enjoyable?

– Are there tools, systems, or even people who could help take some of the load off?

– What’s one small change you could make today to create a big impact later?

And remember, we’re always here to help. Whether it’s sorting out your finances or just having a chat about your goals, we’re only a message away.

*Side note* We also totally appreciate starting the year can feel overwhelming. Please don’t feel the need to make a million changes or start lots of new hobbies. Being a business owner, and doing it well, is overwhelming enough. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself this January and we’re here if you need us.

From all of us at ChadStone, here’s to a year of growth, success, and most importantly your happiness, in 2025!

How to Switch Off and Enjoy the Christmas Holidays as a Business Owner

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s time to talk about something important: switching off.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. Business owners? Switch off? During one of the busiest seasons of the year?!

We get it—it’s not always easy to fully step away. But trust us, taking a proper break is not just good for your sanity; it’s crucial for recharging and getting ready to take on the new year.

So, grab a mince pie, get comfy, and let’s dive into some tips to help you actually enjoy the Christmas holidays as a business owner—without constantly checking emails under the table at family dinners!

  1. Plan Ahead and Set Boundaries 🙅

The key to switching off is planning ahead. You can’t fully relax if you’re worried about what’s happening with the business while you’re out singing carols. So, a little pre-holiday prep will go a long way in helping you switch off with peace of mind.

Before the holidays hit, make a clear to-do list of what needs to be done before you can step away. Prioritise what’s most urgent, delegate where you can, and get any major tasks squared away.

Then, set boundaries—both for yourself and for others. Let clients, employees, and partners know your holiday availability (or better yet, your unavailability). Set up an out-of-office email, inform your team of emergency contacts (if any), and stick to your boundaries. It’s important for everyone to understand that this is your time to recharge.

  1. Delegate, Delegate, Delegate 🤝

As a business owner, you probably wear a lot of hats. But for the holidays, it’s time to pass some of those hats to your team (or even outsource a few tasks if needed). Delegation is crucial if you want to fully switch off.

Trust your team to handle things while you’re away. Whether it’s day-to-day tasks, social media updates, or client communications, let your employees take the reins for a bit. Not only will this give you a break, but it’ll also empower your team to step up and shine.

If you’re a solo business owner, consider automating a few processes, like scheduling social media posts in advance or setting up automated email responses, to keep things ticking along while you sip eggnog by the fire.

  1. Wrap Up Your Year-End Finances (Before You Clock Off)💷

If you’ve followed our November blog post (you know, the one about tying up your 2024 finances), you should already be well on your way to having your books in order.

But just in case you haven’t crossed everything off your list, take a few moments to finalise your year-end finances.

Wrap up any outstanding invoices, make sure expenses are logged, and review your cash flow one last time. By doing this before the holidays, you’ll head into your break with a clear mind and fewer financial worries.

Plus, you’ll thank yourself come January when you’re not faced with a mountain of paperwork right out of the gate.

  1. Set a Realistic Holiday Work Schedule ⏲️

Look, we get it. Sometimes it’s hard to completely switch off from work, especially if your business is buzzing over the Christmas period. But instead of fighting it, set yourself a realistic work schedule.

If you absolutely have to work, decide when and how much you’ll allow yourself to do.

For example, maybe you’ll check your emails for 30 minutes each morning, or perhaps you’ll set aside an hour on certain days for urgent tasks.

The key here is to keep it limited and stick to your schedule. Don’t let a quick check-in turn into a full workday. By setting boundaries for yourself, you can still keep an eye on things without letting work consume your holiday.

  1. Make Time for Yourself and Loved Ones 💜💚

The Christmas season is meant for spending quality time with family and friends, so make sure to prioritise that.

Schedule time for activities that you truly enjoy, whether it’s decorating the tree with your kids, watching classic Christmas films, or enjoying a festive feast with loved ones.

Being present in these moments is crucial for recharging your mental batteries and soaking in the holiday spirit. So, put the phone down, stop thinking about work for a bit, and let yourself fully enjoy the company of those around you. After all, that’s what the season is all about!

  1. Turn Off Notifications (Yes, Really!)👋

This one’s a game-changer: turn off those work-related notifications. We all know that constant pinging of emails, Slack messages, or app alerts can drag you right back into work mode in a second.

For the holidays, turn off non-essential notifications and give yourself a break from the noise. You’ll be surprised at how much more relaxed you feel when you’re not constantly interrupted by the demands of work.

You can still check in if you absolutely must, but by silencing notifications, you control when you engage, rather than being pulled in whenever your phone buzzes.

  1. Plan Some Downtime—For You 💆

Beyond family commitments and Christmas gatherings, carve out a little you time this Christmas. Whether it’s a quiet morning to read a book, a solo walk, or just a lazy afternoon nap, give yourself permission to rest and recharge.

As a business owner, it’s easy to forget that taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your business. Use this time to unwind, relax, and reflect on the year gone by. You’ve earned it!

So there you have it—some simple, yet effective ways to switch off and enjoy the Christmas holidays as a business owner.

Whether you’re wrapping up your final to-dos or are able to delegate tasks, the key is to plan ahead, set boundaries, and give yourself permission to truly relax.

Here’s to a stress-free, restful Christmas!

And as always, if you need a hand with anything business or finance-related before the break, the team at ChadStone Accountancy & Tax is here for you.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, everyone!
